Faculty-Instructional Design Duo Recognized for Developing a Technology-Rich, Engaging, and Pedagogically Sound Course

The University of Arkansas System eVersity has won another national award for its innovative online course design through Blackboard’s Exemplary Course Program (ECP), which recognizes faculty and course designers from universities around the world who develop engaging courses that represent the best in technology and learning.

Tamla Heminger, an eVersity professor and assistant program director for Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas’s Occupational Therapy program, and Ramesh Muthukumarana, an instructional designer at eVersity, won the award for a Medical Terminology course they collaborated on in the 100 percent-online university’s Healthcare Management degree program.

According to Blackboard, the course demonstrated excellence in four areas:
• Course Design: the elements of instructional design, such as its structure, learning objectives, and instructional strategies
• Interaction and Collaboration: the level of engagement offered by the course and the level of student interaction and collaboration
• Assessment: the evaluation of student work toward the achievement of learning outcomes and the quality and type of student assessments
• Learner Support: the resources made available to students, which may be accessible within or external to the course environment

For 17 years, the ECP has recognized instructors and course designers whose courses demonstrate best practices. Since its founding, thousands of instructors, teachers and designers have used the ECP to evaluate and improve their courses. To be considered for the honor, applicants must be a user of Blackboard’s learning management systems. Submitted courses are evaluated by other course developers, instructional designers, teachers and professors using the ECP Rubric.

“When we launched the state’s only 100 percent-online university a few short years ago, we set out to make high-quality college degrees attainable and affordable for working learners,” said Michael Moore, Ph.D., chief academic and operations officer at eVersity. “But we also wanted to offer innovative, engaging online courses that not only kept the attention of our students, but made it easier for them to learn the material and feel like a part of a learning community. This award deomonstrates that we are accomplishing that goal and our student success data even further reflects this commitment. I’m extremely proud of all of our faculty and staff, especially Ramesh and Tamla, in helping eVersity accomplish what we’re setting out to do.”

Heminger and Muthukumarana were honored alongside other outstanding recipients on the Blackboard website as well as in the Blackboard Community, a platform where the largest organized network of Blackboard users connect, collaborate and learn from their peers.
